The New Testament And The Mishnah: Shabbath (Sabbath)
Introduction
Charles R. Gianotti's book "The New Testament and the Mishnah", proposes cross references between the Mishnah and the Greek Scriptures (or New Testament).
Regretably Gianotti's book is currently out of print; although second-hand copies are occasionally available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble etc.
The purpose of this page is to take an extract from Gianotti's work and the corresponding extract from the Mishnah to allow readers to compare one part of the Mishnah with corresponding scriptures from the Greek Scriptures (New Testament) at their leisure. An example of this is shown later on this page.
The rear cover of Gianotti's book says:
"The value of rabbinic literature for biblical studies has long been recognized by many scholars," writes the author. "But due to the vastness of this field and the paucity of good works in English, the Bible student finds difficult a firsthand study of this literature."
This index to the New Testament and the Mishnah will greatly reduce the difficulty. It guides the user to more than 2,500 cross-references between the books of the New Testament and the tractates of the Mishnah. These references are listed in two sequences: first the New Testament books in canonical order, then the mishnaic tractates in alphabetical order.
The Bible student who possesses this index and one of the two commonly available translations of the Mishnah—that of Herbert Danby or that of Philip Blackman—will be able to read the New Testament in the light of mishnaic literature.
A basic working knowledge of the Mishnah, Jewish patterns of thought and methods of interpretation, and the early rabbinic view of the Old Testament will greatly enhance this avenue of study. A bibliography at the conclusion of the author's introduction identifies the best introductory works in the field.
Charles R. Gianotti, who holds the Th.M. degree from Dallas Theological Seminary, is a systems analyst and programmer with Priority Systems.
Extract from "The New Testament and the Mishnah" by Charles R. Gianotti
The following table is an extract from Gianotti's book, which shows an example of the the correspondence between the Shabbath (Sabbath) tractate of the Mishnah and the Greek Scriptures of the Bible in his view. After this section, there are scanned images of the Mishnah's Shabbath (Sabbath) Tractate, so that (at least for this particular tractate of the Mishnah) readers can make the comparisons for themselves.

Go back to the start of Judianity - A "Third Way" Between Judaism or Christianity ?
An adjustment to the law to circumcise gentile proselytes caused massive unrest in Acts for the predominantly Jewish first century church. If the rest of the written Torah has been abolished; why wassn't a similar level of strife generated ? Paul offered post crucifixion sacrifices &kept Nazirite vows at the temple many christian theologians believe. So does Galatians really mean the Torah law is "abolished"?
We hope you found this article about Mishnah Shabbath / Sabbath engaging. Let's now take a closer look at the subject of Jewish baptism or immersion in the Mikvah.
