References to Anal Sex and Sodomy in the Bible

Sodomy and Anal Sex in the Bible

Its surprising, but there are plenty of people who believe that the Bible is silent on the subject of heterosexual anal sex. Scripture refers to anal sex as sodomy. Someone who practises sodomy or anal sex is therefore referred to as a sodomite.

Deuteronomy 23:17

There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.

1 Kings 14:24

22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
23 For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree.
24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

The Greek or Apostolic Scriptures Regarding Anal Sex in the Bible

Consistent with the Hebrew scriptures views on anal sex, Paul writes to the Christians at Corinth about the serious consequences of engaging in sodomy or anal sex in the Bible. Paul is noticeably dogmatic about it. Those who ignore these very specific directives will not inherit the Kingdom of God (vs 10).

1 Corinthians 6:

9 ¶ Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (AV)

Young's Literal Translation translates "abusers of themselves with mankind" as "sodomites".

1 Corinthians 6:

9 ¶ have ye not known that the unrighteous the reign of God shall not inherit? be not led astray; neither whoremongers, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor sodomites,
10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, the reign of God shall inherit. (Youngs Literal Translation)

Heterosexual Anal Sex in the Bible

We should take careful note. What reasons are there for suggesting that the admonitions in all of these scriptures apply only to homosexual acts of anal intercourse, and not heterosexual acts too?

Arguably, in none of these scriptures refering to sodomy does the Bible specify that it's referring to homosexual sex specifically. Indeed, to presume that these references apply to only homosexual men would be reading into scripture. Consequently, we should presume that the prohibition of anal sex in the Bible applies equally to heterosexual married couples.

Theologians believe that even after the crucifixion Paul kept Nazirite vows at the temple and offered sacrifices.
